My Crafting Journey: From Cross-Stitch to Crochet

Today I wanted to provide those of you who don’t already know me some background about me, and what prompted me to start this blog.

I’ve been a crafter for most of my life. It started when I was a child, when my grandmother taught me how to cross-stitch. When I was in my 20’s, my best friend and I started a handmade jewelry business called The Perfect Loop.

This photo was taken when I was 23 weeks pregnant, participating in one of my last craft fairs as a jewelry vendor.

We had so much fun making unique pieces of jewelry and doing craft fairs together. After my son was born, I became really interested in scrapbooking. I participated in a style of scrapbooking called Project Life for a few years. At this time I also was making handmade greeting cards and experimenting with making some digital scrapbooking graphics. I was a member of a couple of digital scrapbooking design teams as well.

This is one of the digital layouts I designed using a scrapbooking kit from Amber LaBau Designs, one of the creative teams I was on.

For several years I ran a blog called A Vegas Girl at Heart, where I shared many digital freebies, talked about my current projects, and shared many photos of my family. I even made a few YouTube videos making handmade cards. I have closed that blog down now as I generally have tried to back away from much of an online presence as my son as gotten older. I have also become disenchanted by social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram over the years because of how much negativity is out there.

In the recent years, shortly before the big P word hit, I learned how to crochet. I actually worked at Joann’s for a few years part time during this period of my life and really fell in love with all the beautiful colors of yarn we sold. I had tried to knit at first, and couldn’t figure it out, but crochet came naturally. I just wish I would have learned this craft while my grandmother was still alive, because she loved to crochet and I think she would have enjoyed watching me learn and seeing what I made.

One of my earlier crochet projects, the Textured Tote from Yarnspirations. I made this using Yarn Bee’s Sugarwheel Cotton yarn in the color Sprinkles on Top.

Around the same time as learning to crochet, I also got really interested in diamond painting. I finished a lot of the canvases I collected, however, I sheepishly have to admit I have a huge stash of canvases just waiting for me to work on.

One of the first diamond painting projects I completed. Diamond Dotz and Diamond Art Club are my two favorite diamond art companies to purchase kits from. Both companies have their products widely available and are excellent quality kits.

I have been keeping track of my crochet projects on a site called Ravelry, but recently I made my first project completely freehand (no pattern). This led to me wanting to create my own skirt pattern, which I am currently working on. I wasn’t sure how to share it with everyone for free, and decided that starting a blog where I can post the pattern for those who’d like to try making it would be my best option. And so, here we are.

My intention for this blog isn’t just to be a crochet blog, but a place where I can share whatever crafty project I am working on. I would like to share some tutorials here, give some reviews of my favorite crafty products, and sometimes pop in some photos from trips my family takes. (We love to cruise and go to the theme parks in Florida, mainly).

This photo was taken on our last Disney cruise, at Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point, on the nature trail. There are many little nooks and crannies to explore at the end of this trail. Definitely check it out if you are going on a Disney cruise.

I hope you’ll stick around and maybe even find some useful tips here. Happy crafting!
